Fine Arts Academy - Instrumental Music

Assistance League of Flintridge administers an instrumental music program for 4th through 6th grade students in the three public elementary schools of La Cañada Unified School District. Students receive 60 minutes of instruction once a week in string, wind, brass or percussion instruments.

The classes are open to all interested students and take place during the school year on each school campus before and after school during the regular school week. Students perform in a winter concert in December and a spring concert in May at Lanterman Auditorium.

Who Teaches?

Mike Davis, John Tegmeyer,& Pat Aiken

Two of our talented music instructors will be returning for their 6th year in the FAA Music Program. They are:

Patricia Aiken is the Lead Teacher of the music program. Pat teaches the Beginning Strings class as well as the String Orchestra. She is a violinist with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Arts Degree in Performance from the University of California Santa Barbara. For over twenty years, she was a member of the first violin section of the Los Angeles Music Center Opera Orchestra, Pasadena Symphony, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. In addition she was a motion picture, television and recording musician. She currently teaches privately specializing in the violin and viola. She can be emailed at fiddlefaddler@earthlink.net.

John Tegmeyer teaches the Beginning Woodwinds students as well as the Concert Band.
John is a freelance musician based in Los Angeles, CA. He is currently in high demand as a live and recording artist on clarinet and saxophone in both classical and jazz venues. He performs in operas, orchestras, musicals, big bands, small jazz ensembles, as well as his own groups. John received his Bachelor of Music Degree in Performance from West Texas A&M University in 2004. His email address is clarijazz@hotmail.com.

Mike Davis, our newest instructor, teaches our Beginning Brass and Percussion students and assists with the Concert Band. He is a trumpet player with a Bachelor of Music Degree from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a Master of Music Degree from USC Thorton School of Music. Mike does a lot of freelance work as well as being the trumpet instructor for the Concert and Jazz bands at Crescenta Valley High School. Mike was a student of our ALF Instrumental Music Program when he was in 4th through 6th grade at Palm Crest Elementary. You can email him at mdtrpt@hotmail.com.

Cost

The cost for the program is $95. Students are also responsible for supplying their own rented or purchased instruments. Students who do not have instruments may rent them from Assistance League of Flintridge for a non-refundable fee of $150 per year. There is a limited supply of instruments. They are issued on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to new students.
